Exploring Morocco: Highlights from the 2019 FIAP Photo Meeting

In 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the 6th FIAP Photo Meeting in Morocco, an event that brought together 200 photographers from 36 countries. This journey took us through some of Morocco’s most breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cultural sites, providing endless inspiration for our lenses. Here’s a detailed account of my unforgettable experience.

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech

Our adventure began in the vibrant city of Marrakech, where we explored the historic El Badii Palace. The palace’s grandeur and intricate designs offered a glimpse into Morocco’s rich history. The evening was spent capturing the bustling life in the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, with its lively markets, street performers, and aromatic food stalls.

We embarked on a 2000 km journey through the stunning Draa-Tafilalt and Jebel Saghro valleys. These regions, with their dramatic landscapes, provided us with endless photographic opportunities. The rugged terrain, dotted with oases and ancient kasbahs, was a feast for the eyes and the camera.

Day 4: Camel Caravan to Merzouga

One of the highlights of the trip was our excursion to the dunes of Merzouga. Meeting camel drivers with their caravans of 130 dromedaries was a surreal experience. We ventured into the desert on camelback, capturing the majestic dunes as the sun set, creating an ethereal glow over the landscape. The evening in Merzouga was magical, with a bonfire and traditional Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia, a testament to the enduring legacy of the trans-Saharan trade routes.

Our journey continued to Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the Sahara. This city, famous for its cinematic landscapes, offered a unique blend of history and modernity. We visited the ancient kasbahs and the film studios where many Hollywood movies have been shot. The combination of historical architecture and the stunning desert backdrop was a photographer’s dream.
