Exploring Armenia: My Adventures at the FIAP Photo Meeting 2023

This October, I embarked on an unforgettable journey to Armenia for the FIAP Photo Meeting 2023. This gathering of photographers from around the globe not only offered a platform for artistic exchange but also took us on incredible excursions across Armenia’s breathtaking landscapes and historical sites.

Arrival in Yerevan

The adventure began in Yerevan, Armenia’s vibrant capital. The city’s mix of ancient history and modern flair immediately caught my eye. Wandering through the streets of Yerevan, with its charming cafes, bustling markets, and historic buildings, I felt an instant connection to the place. The pink tuff stone buildings, often referred to as the “Pink City,” provided a unique and picturesque setting.

Day 1: Discovering Garni and Geghard

Our first excursion took us to the ancient Temple of Garni, a magnificent Greco-Roman colonnaded building that stands as a testament to Armenia’s rich historical tapestry. Perched on a cliff’s edge, the temple offered stunning views of the surrounding Azat River Gorge. Capturing the temple’s majestic columns against the backdrop of the rugged landscape was a thrilling experience.

From Garni, we made our way to the Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Carved out of a mountain, this medieval monastery complex is partially built into the surrounding cliffs. The intricate rock-cut architecture and the serene atmosphere made Geghard an absolute highlight. The natural light filtering through the stone chambers created perfect conditions for some evocative shots.

Day 2: Lake Sevan and Sevanavank Monastery

Our second day’s trip led us to Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. The lake’s azure waters contrasted beautifully with the golden autumn foliage. We spent the morning capturing the serene beauty of the lake, its calm surface reflecting the sky and mountains.

Nearby, the Sevanavank Monastery, perched on a peninsula, provided another spectacular photo opportunity. The ancient stone churches, set against the backdrop of the expansive lake and distant mountains, made for some dramatic compositions. The history of the monastery, coupled with its stunning location, added depth to every photograph we took.

Day 3: The Charm of Dilijan

On the third day, we journeyed to Dilijan, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Armenia” for its lush forests and mountainous terrain. The town’s charming streets and traditional architecture were incredibly picturesque. We visited the Haghartsin Monastery, nestled deep in the forest. The tranquility of the setting and the soft light filtering through the trees made it a perfect spot for capturing the interplay of nature and architecture.

Day 4: The Historical Wonders of Khor Virap and Noravank

One of the most anticipated trips was to Khor Virap Monastery, located near the Turkish border with a direct view of the majestic Mount Ararat. The monastery’s silhouette against the snow-capped peak of Ararat was a sight to behold. The historical significance of Khor Virap, being the site where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned, added a profound narrative to our photos.

In the afternoon, we visited Noravank, a monastery nestled in a dramatic red-rock canyon. The intricate carvings of the monastery’s facade and the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape provided endless inspiration. The play of light and shadow in the late afternoon sun added a mystical quality to our shots.

Day 5: The Enigmatic Tatev Monastery

Our final excursion took us to Tatev Monastery, accessible via the world’s longest reversible cable car, the Wings of Tatev. The cable car ride itself was an exhilarating experience, offering panoramic views of the Vorotan River Gorge. The monastery, perched on a plateau, seemed almost otherworldly. The combination of medieval architecture and the stunning natural setting made Tatev a photographer’s paradise.

Reflection

Each destination we visited during the FIAP Photo Meeting offered a unique glimpse into Armenia’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Attending the FIAP Photo Meeting in Armenia was more than just a photographic journey; it was an immersion into a land of profound history and breathtaking scenery. I left Armenia with not only a portfolio full of stunning images but also a heart full of memories and newfound friends from around the world.
